Health and Social Services Committee

Timiskaming First Nation is moving toward local governance, in which the Health and Social Services Committee has more accountability, responsibility and authority over the community’s health and social services plans. Specifically, the committee has terms of reference which includes an ongoing advisory role for program development and revision. Therefore, the Health and Social Service Committee which meets quarterly, helps this plan be a link to the community and its needs rather than to the government funders.
The Health and Social Services Committee reflects the Timiskaming First Nation Health & Wellness Centre’s objectives to improve wellness and to help us trust each other for the collective well-being of the community. The committee is a conduit for engaging the community and getting feedback to ensure that decisions are reflective of community members’ concerns.
The committee also reflects the fact that Timiskaming First Nation Health & Wellness Centre doubled its space with a renovation in 2017 to allow for all the health and social programs to be housed in the same facility. Despite funding for this extension originating from First Nations and Inuit Health Branch which was a separate federal government depar
tment at the time, First Line Services (Child and Family Services) programs are based within the same facility
